THE CURRENT PROBLEM

Many hospitality companies in Africa but also worldwide lack in local, skilled employees on a non-managerial level and are not able to offer dual vocational training opportunities which would make them an attractive employer and an important pillar of the industry’s future. The high costs involved, non-existing officially recognised qualifications, long distance to vocational schools, disturbance of day-to-day operations resulting from training requirements and assessment, and lack of qualified practical trainers prevent companies from solving the skill deficit problem. Resulting, companies train their unskilled employees to perform single specific tasks according to the required standards. This approach might work for companies with a maximum length of stay of two nights in the short run without causing difficulties and lack in service readiness and responsiveness.
